To the Left, To the Left [12.30.06]

Last night the girls and I rented a car and drove to Rhode Island for the first of two Monty Are I home shows. I was in a bum-out mood, but those girls never fail to crack me up. Combine them with a lot of vodka, the Cranston crew, the AMAZING live show of Monty Are I, and a sweet house party and I was all set. Some highlights in no particular order...(these moments are hazy at best) -

Jiscilla likes neither sandwiches nor Justin Timberlake. I can't quite grasp either notion. When we stopped at Subway, Christy reacted to Jiscilla by saying, "At least it's not called Sandwichway!" Who doesn't like sandwiches?!

Everybody in the packed venue jumping in unison and making me feel a little scared that the floor would fall through. It was awesome.

Kelly back in the driver seat like all our old road trips. Despite being in NYC for two years, her road rage remains strong. I love her for it.

Christy explaining to us the moment she thought British people had shorter arms than anybody else. Yeah.

Our rented car was a Chrysler 300. We named it Styles Bentley the Third. We were styling.

I think my drinking curbed the fact that I was in the mood to punch people in the face if they so much as gave me a sideways glance. So nobody got hurt. Yay!

On our way back home from the show, besides screaming our lungs out to Beyonce's "Irreplaceable," (how fucking good is that song?!) I called the local radio station to request Fall Out Boy's "This Ain't a Scene" and the DJ goes, "If it isn't a scene, what is it?" My voice is all super-raspy because of screaming my lungs out at the show, Beyonce singing, and all that vodka that had burned my esophagus, I screamed "IT'S A GODDAMN ARMS RACE." The dude (who was probably a Brown University freshman) loved me.

My inebriated state led me to yell out "double-u, double-u, double-u DOT myspace DOT com BACKSLASH nicksnow" at lulls in conversation.

Donnie at 8 pm: I WILL NOT DANCE WITH YOU TO FALL OUT BOY!!
Donnie at midnight: JESS, IT'S FALL OUT BOY, LET'S DANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Erica (aka DJ The Clap - we've decided...) started a Midtown dance party.

Steve: I am not dancing with you to Midtown.
Apparently everybody thinks they don't want to dance with me.

I found Erica's sidekick on a counter and proceeded to IM Nick Snow: "thisl is jessidkca i luove yoasu" ...Erica, I'm kind of obsessed with your boyfriend and I think you should step up and get jealouz. I then placed the sidekick in a cabinet.

DJ The Clap also got Monty Are I's manager out on the dance floor (aka Felicia's living room) for a song. Dude was wasted-face. And it was hilarious.

Erica: "Wait, it gets BETTER!"

Felicia felt up Rawan's boobs. That is all I'm going to say about that, except that it was not in any way sexual.

Much love to: Ben - who got a new nose ring and who's coming for NEW YEARS!!!! Nick Fircanis - whose heart was broken that very morning, but still managed to dance the night away. I faintly remember a homo-erotic moment between Nick and Steve (but this is old hat). Justin fucking Aromin - I love this dude. Emily - She also owns my heart. Rob Y - Moving to New York in March? He doesn't even know what's going to hit him. John - dude rules when it comes to helping out MAI. Donnie! Rawan! Keera - Mike's gf is a fan, but she'd drank too much at the show to make it to our afterparty. Andrew & Jackie. Sabrina and her brand new leather LAMB bag that I will never, ever be able to afford. Ever. Ian aka Cutless from Yo Momma. And there is probably like a million more people I saw last night that I forgot to mention...or forgot I saw...Oops.

Felicia is the bestest hostess EVER. Girl got up like an hour after we all passed out, went to the gym, and then picked us up some bagels and coffee when we woke up. CHAMPION. Also, she is really good at eye makeup. Yes.

Steve is still the man. We can still have good conversations from opposite sides of the room.

This road trip was a follow-up to the legendary inaugural Sans Plans/Sans Pants/Dance, Dance Tour of May 06. We deemed it the Srry2Say Tour. It was even more successful, and completely sold out.

Erica discovered she is a HUGE Akon fan.

Dancing on Felicia's couch with one hand on the ceiling for balance and a Tab Energy & Vodka in the other for pleasure. This is how I welcomed everyone to the party as soon as they walked in the door.

Christy's constant squealing makes me so happy.

Felicia, Kelly, Christy, Jiscilla, and I ALL missing the huge sign for 195 on the way home from the show. How do you get lost in Rhode Island?!

As I was looking through Jiscilla's pictures in the morning -
Jiscilla: Oh, that was the Magazine Cover Shoot. Christy yelled out titles of magazines and Nick struck a pose and I took the picture.

There was a long, drawn-out, conversation in the car ride home about syphiliz. This all started because Christy asked if someone had siblings, and I thought she asked if someone had syphilis. We went on for about an hour, and I deemed Erica DJ The Clap in the process. STDs are funny.

The MAI set was fucking amaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing. Erica and I were were flipping out, holding hands, dancing with people we didn't know, and just being hot messes. "Anchor & Hope" - the handclap, gets me EVERY TIME. I LOVE THAT FUCKING SONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The crowd demanded an encore and I was in the back of the crowd jumping up and down and screaming at the top of my lungs, "CASTLEBOUND!!!!!!!!! CASTLEBOUND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" and then they played "Castlebound." And then they decided to play another song and I yelled, "TIE OF YOUR VEINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! TIE OFF YOUR VEINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Then they played "Tie Off Your Veins." The yellow dress works every time.

Okay, I think that's somewhat it. Pictures to come. And my whole body hurts. And my voice is still raspy. Tomorrow is the last day of 2006 and I'm excited for the clean slate of 2007.

I love girls.

Have a Cokey Christmas! [12.21.06]

My roommate Rachel saw Ewan MacGregor stroll into Barnes & Noble the other morning in dark denim and converse. This happening a week after Kelly and I had a conversation about who we'd be the most starstruck by (male) and both decided Ewan MacGregor was probably tops. Though, after last week's SNL, is there anything at all wrong with Justin Timberlake? Sure, he was in NSync, but that's not THAT bad...it wasn't the Backstreet Boys. Anyway, I'm super jealous of Rachel and wish I could bump into dream boys at my job.

I got the last of my Christmas gifts. I'm so excited for Christmas morning. I always feel like a little kid, no matter what. :)

Last night Erica and I sat on the couch (wooooooo!) and watched bad reality tv because it's our fucking job. Watching the Real World: Denver conjured the same feeling I always get from watching the past few seasons: "Wow, everybody on this show is absolutely worthless." Seriously. And I got kind of creeped out because it reminded me of the last year in Rhode Island - my life probably could have been called The Real World: Kingston. I worked with the people I lived with; three dudes and four girls. Yikes. There was obviously a lot of drinking and shennanigans AND two people who just loved fighting. I usually ignored them or was the peacekeeper, but I remember at times like that I would look into the corners of our apartment and be like, "Is this on secret video?!" ::shudder:: How much I learned from that year....

Moving on, Twenty-four Seven is still delivering the douchebaggery goods. The Prom Kings and their lead singer are AWFUL. Punch in the face awful. Erica and I enjoy the show immensely. But give it up - the best part of those shows are the previews for next week. Right?! Right.

Today: work. Right now: cleaning, packing. It's been tons of fun! I'm the last person left in the apartment before the holidays and I came home and blasted my usual soundtrack to rock the dishes out to. (By the way, song of the day is soooo "Gimme a Sign" by Ryan Adams - who else - his voice is all scratchy and crazy, but I love it. Also, "Perfect and True," a song from the Suicide Handbook bootleg; he delivers another beautiful-sounding line with that voice - "I'll give you my coat..." - the way he says coat. You have to hear it...) Tomorrow: Home to help my Mom bake cookies and enjoy the yard with my pretty dogs. I wish there was snow to roll around in...

PS I got some minor hateration on lj's musicsecret [as one of the "unposted" but still linked secrets - whaaa?] and it's pretty hilarious...has your band made it if fans start bashing your long-gone exgirlfriend?! Steve was none too happy, but whatever, it's not about him - he's happy and I'm uglyyyyy srry2say!!111!!!!!1!!! HAHAHA

PS2 "Have a Cokey Christmas" by Ryan Adams' band The Shit is available on his website...HA.

Everyone have happy holidays!

With my laser on stun [12.18.06]

My roommates and I decided to have a holiday party to break in our non-socialized Brooklyn apartment. We thought the best way to do this was to invite the most random people we knew. And only those we thought would be willing to come out to Brooklyn on a Saturday night. I can't even begin to introduce the people we invited and how we know them... No, I can't. I legit tried to think about it in my head and my brain made that fizzing, sputtering, and then dying noise.

We decorated our giant, wall-less apartment room in garland, lights, and bows for the occasion. I also baked a cake (looked a lot like the one I made for Nick Snow's birthday) and made my special spiked eggnog. We were so domestic.

However, the evening quickly degenerated into chaos given the amount of alcohol, strangers, and general difference of personalities present.

Jessica: This was a great idea! Bringing all these people together...
Erica: I think Kelly's yelling at that guy you knew in high school and haven't seen in five years...
Jessica: Oh, who's that guy throwing brownies at our wall?
Erica: Why did that guy we met one time bring six dudes with him?
Jessica: Do we know any of these people?

Apartment 410 = brilliant. The night began with an insane game of Trivial Pursuit: Pop Culture (uhhhh lost again to the effin' NickSnow/Erica superteam). Some crazy dancing (I got an email today - "Hey, that video of you and I screaming and dancing to Panic! at the Disco is pretty Myspace-able..." My reply: "What video?!" And no, it will never see the light of day). Meeting and greeting. Rooftop hangs! Catching up. Flipping out. Getting to know the neighbors. Being too out of it to go back to Manhattan with Kelly for the JT SNL AfterAfter...(yeah, I'm SO lame...)

The night dwindled down around 4 am and we settled into our living room (i.e., Felicia and I spooned on the ground in front of the tv) to watch the recorded SNL. Justin Timberlake. Charming, hilarious, sexy....my love. I think nearly everybody as seen "Dick in a Box" by now, but also, glean the genius of his physical comedy in a Cup of Soup outfit.

We watched The Soup. Um, Joel McHale with scruff and a peach/brown ensemble? Yes, please. Obsessed...

And due to the clips of "The Bad Girls Club" seen on The Soup, we watched an episode of the show and have now deemed it the best fucking reality show on television. Why? Because it's a bunch of women who just live in a house together, drink, and fight. There's a lot of fighting. You know those people you love to hate on shows like The Real World? Like Floras and Vanessas and Beths? The ones who get drunk, are really loud, get in everybody's face, manipulate people for more airtime, and generally come across as aggressive losers? Imagine a house full of them. It's pretty amazing television at 5 in the morning. I think I'm gonna need a YouTube clip...

How do you embed on Buzznet??? Here it is.

Please take special notice of Ripsi's backhanded slap on the stairway and her "comatose...passed out...no! No! I'm awake and I'm going to kick some ass right after I...fall over this couch and other sorts of furniture lying about the place..." moment.

On Sunday morning the last of the people left (some curled up adorably on yoga mats...) woke up to...more trivial pursuit! Why the fuck not, am I right? And....Nick Snow/Erica won again. By the way, Nick Snow is probably the sweetest TP emcee out thurrr....

That night Erica, Felicia and I went to Jesse's 21st birthday party and then to Sarah/Gurj/Brandon's Spring Break party across the street...fun fun fun times. We got to see the Oohlas perform acoustically (Ollie's voice rules) and I played with Sarah's cat Bella...because just give me a cat and I'll be entertained for a while...Oh and some dudes showed up from some band whose February show went on sale on Saturday and sold out in less than five minutes...just saying. (yeswegottickets...)

Some random notes:

Hi, I'm an Avril Lavigne fan. According to her latest MySpace blog, her new album comes out in April and she's going to call it - The Best Dam Thing. Wince. Regardless, I'll be into it. Guilty pleasure admitted. Also, how funny would it be to walk into a store and buy something with this:

The next film in the Die Hard franchise to be called: Live Free and Die Hard ? Yesssssss!

I was perusing New York Magazine's [slightly pretentious] "Reasons to Love New York" and this reason, about "The Next Isabella Rosselini" living in New York made me miniflip. I went to college with that girl! She disappeared from BU after freshman year, and I guess she moved to NYC...one time my roommate Melissa and I were standing in the lobby talking to her about class stuff and all of a sudden a woman is walking full speed towards us with her coat tails flying behind her and her arm fully extended to shake my hand a good 4 feet before she reached me..."Hi, I'm Isabella, so good to meet you." She did the same to Melissa and then we turned to Elettra and she goes, "This is my mom..." Oh. Cool. Whatevs. We had no idea. Isabella is super-glamorous and gorgeous and, hello, she's Ingrid Bergman's daughter. Probably one of the coolest celebrity encounters I've had...

Now I must sleep. I'm excited for Christmas and cookies and family...I'm loving Aimee Mann's holiday album, "A Drifter in the Snow" - it's not as melancholy as you might think. Her voice soothes me. I've also been listening to Colin Hay's "Overkill" - but that's cause I'm a huge Scrubs dork. Also, it's been a couple of months, but the Matches' Decomposer has not gone a day unheard by mine ears.

Accidentally Hot as Fuck [12.13.06]

I've had some down time at work today and so I've been perusing Ryan Adams' website (I'm obsessed, okay?) and I thought I'd compile a list of his most amazing song titles from his site's songs...and share them. Because I can't be the only one laughing at these...

Ryan has been releasing them under three psuedo-bands: DJ Reggie, The Shit, and WereWolph. Listen HERE. He raps. He screeches. They crack me UP...especially "Sexfuck" where Ryan raps about JT's sexyback and then wishes him a Merry Christmas. Also, check out "TV Shows: The Movie." It's bizarre and hilarious and just look at these titles...

Simultaneously compiling that list and listening to the songs = crying in my cubicle. Just saying.

P.S. On Ryan's bio page:

The Cardinals are a band focused on music and are based on the planet Earth, a satellite of Sol or "The Sun" the center of the galaxy. They rely heavily on naps, food, metal, reggae mixes and comps scored from Kim's Video right when they are closing to make this one guy even more mad at people who don't know as much as he knows about music and movies, and are guided by the rainbows and fairy tales Robie tells us at night when we are being rocked softly to sleep to the sounds of his magic harp made of candy and strung with the hair of unicorns.

Okay. I'm going to try to work. I'm also kind of in love with Ryan Adams even more after this. I kind of wouldn't mind having a drugged-out, drunk and despondent relationship with him...for a week. I think I could only handle a week.

PS2 Yesterday I found out Ryan Adams has a Christmas song: "Hey Parker, It's Christmas." Obviously written about Parker Posey (his former girlfriend), but my last name is Parker and I'm going with it. The song also rules. Like most of his (non-website) stuff. Scratch that - all his stuff rules.

Monty Are I-ness.

Monty Are I's Wall of People (Stolen Transmission, 2006)
Track. By. Track.

First of all, this review is biased. I know entirely too much about these boys whom I've been friends with for five years. I've seen them play at VFW halls and churches. I've seen them write, create, practice, and fight. I've witnessed the sacrifices they've made just to be able to do what they love. I've never encountered people with more passion for their music, their fans, and each other than these five. So, there's no way my brain can exclude all that while listening, thinking, and writing about these songs. The great thing about music is that it aurally links people, places, things (a smell, a time, a scene, etc). A song can store memories. I think about these five hardworking boys when I listen to Wall of People.

About half of the songs were recorded for their independently released 2005 album, The Red Shift. Two of them were recorded with producer Mitch Allan (lead singer of SR-71). Monty Are I co-produced all the songs on the album. When they got signed by Stolen Transmission Records on March 3, 2006, they went into the studio with producer Matt Squire (Panic! at the Disco, Thrice) with new songs to record for their label debut. These songs, plus the best offerings on The Red Shift comprise Wall of People.

One more note: from what I've gathered via internet message boards and general conversation overheard at shows, their most controversial issue is their name. A year before getting signed they no longer felt "Monty's Fan Club" suited their sound, as they had formed in high school and had grown considerably in many ways. They simply shortened it to "Monty," which isn't much different but still caused somewhat of an uproar. When they got signed this past March the label had to make sure the name wasn't copyrighted - and it was. So they were forced to change their name again, lest they be faced with lawsuits. People seemed to get really pissed off about this third change, but it all came down to legal issues. The guys were rightfully frustrated by having to pick another name. I won't disclose their top choices, but I will tell you they made the right one (even if I didn't think so at the time). [Sidenote: Let it be noted that Monty's Fan Club was also not a viable option during the name-change.]

Okay, one more piece of information before getting to the tracks (yeah, I'm being totally serious about this). Songwriting for them is a collaborative effort, with Steve writing most of the lyrics. They all have a say in what goes into the song musically. I should probably introduce the band since I realize some might not be familiar with this action rock outfit - Steve Aiello - lead vocals, guitar; Andrew Borstein (aka The Infamous, Mama Andrew) - keyboard, trombone, keytar (yes.); Mike Matarese - bass; Justin Muir - drums; Ryan Muir - vocals, guitar, trumpet. I know you see those horns...you'll have to trust me on this one if you've never heard them before - they're not a ska band. They call themselves action rock, and I'm sticking to that. Moving on to the music itself...

1. Between the Sheets - In general, non-cheesy songs about making out rule. The song is poppy; it was listener-voted to be their single on the local radio station in Providence when The Red Shift came out (over "In this Legacy"). It's fast and full of Monty's trademark energy and Steve and Ryan's singing sexes it up. The in-your-face quality of the song makes it a great opener to this debut: pay attention.  The acoustic version (released on a special show-only EP last year) has a slower, even reggae flavor to it. You can see them perform it acoustically at Casa de Ultragrrrl here:

 2. Castlebound - Let's all embrace our inner geek. In a day when Hugh Jackman is starring in a comic book lover's dream movie, there's gotta be room for a band to base a song on a videogame. Specifically, The Legend of Zelda. As a long-time geek, comic book fan, and unabashed Wolverine lover, this was my favorite song on The Red Shift. You've never heard the word "princess" uttered so sincerely. Combine my love of nerdiness with a Nintendo-like intro, a beat that shakes my hips, and a face-melting guitar solo (the most face meltingist of the album, in my opinion!) and you have Jessica's ultimate Geek Out song. I'm trying to convince Steve to do a full-blown dance remix for pure hip-shaking enjoyment.

3. Dublin Waltz - One of the Matt Squire-produced tracks, it's different from what Monty Are I has done in the past, and I love it. The tempo starts slow and methodical, but builds into an epic crescendo during the bridge that gives me goosebumps, especially live. Ryan and Steve's vocals during the breakdown ease the listener into the hunt-like atmosphere of the story while the drums thump like a heartbeat.

4. Anchor & Hope - Obviously these guys have a lot of hometown/state pride (if you haven't noticed, the grammatically bizarre "Are I" in their name signifies the letters "R" and "I" of Rhode Island). The state's flag has an anchor depicted above the state's motto of "Hope." The song ties in these Rhode Island symbols to the idea of being able to show pride for your home, while breaking out of its boundaries to be successful. Another Squire song, I listened to it on repeat until I got the hand clap down in the middle of the song. I love love love seeing the audience do it with them live. Anchor & Hope is probably the most straightforward of their tracks, and I'd guess the easiest for people to get into.

5. O Brother - The song could be considered political, as its about one of their brother's choosing the military lifestyle. Lyrically it questions his decision to join the military, though ultimately respecting it and showing pride for a loved one. The sound is anthemic and epic, which is always accompanied by a kickass guitar solo! Wait I forgot the most important part - if you see this song live, Andrew will be going crazy on the keytar, and it's quite a sight.

[Sidenote: In general, these boys have the most amazing live show, but if you see them, please keep Andrew in your sights because his moves are ridiculous to the point that I cry because I'm laughing so hard. My favorite move is when he leans back away from the keyboard, as if gearing to go crazy on it, and then comes back to hit one note and he's gone again. ...I guess you have to see that live.]

6. Island City - What I like to call an interlude that sounds a bit to me like a mash up of Patrick Swayze's "She's Like the Wind" and the SuperNintendo music for Donkey Kong Country's underwater levels (best. game. ever.) [Sidenote: I've just realized that this is my second videogame reference. I am clearly a nerd.] I love the slow, dream-like transition into the next song, "Metropolis," which serves as the harsh reality to the sounds of "Island City."

7. Metropolis - I love this song. It's a nostalgic favorite of Erica's (back when we knew it as "Sad City") and it's really hard to explain our love for it, we found. First of all, I tried writing about how good it is, and there are just not enough words to describe music (which makes perfect sense, really). But not even Erica could pinpoint the heart of the song, save to say that it rocks our faces and can get any crowd to jump in unison. No really, I can't write any more about this song.

8. In This Legacy - This is what the boys are all about. The chorus goes - "this is how we live/This is what we breathe" and the intensity of the song shows they mean it. The passion I talked about earlier with these boys is all up-front here. They're constantly putting themselves on the line for what they love.

9. Tie Off  Your Veins - A song that can be danced to, it's also about drugs! The song with the most horns, it's in no way ska or big band. It's epic. Sometimes I think of MAI as a slightly toned down Muse with horns. Go with it.

10. Just in Time - If you've listened to Monty, you know their songs are full of layers. There's a lot of composition and details; "Just in Time" is about as stripped as Monty Are I gets, save an acoustic performance. Being their only ballad on the album (I consider "Island City" an interlude, not a stand alone song), it means a lot to me and for all the reasons you're probably thinking about. Once you listen to it, you'll get it. I'm the sucker that cried when I first heard the final version. And don't even get me started on it live...

11. Only the Weak - Your first reaction when hearing this song: "Wait, is this Survivor?" Pretty much. It's an epic 80s-like anthem fit for throwing down, working out, punching anything, and getting pumped. Which is why it belongs in the new Rocky movie. Seriously, I'd like to start a campaign. The new movie (ironically enough starring Milo Ventimiglia of Heroes, who is Steve's freaky lookalike) should be playing "Only the Weak" during one of those gearing-up-for-the-big-fight montages and again at the end during victory (to recall all that determination and perseverance of the montage - cinema verite!). I also found that the entire album is close to the exact length of my commute to and from work, and therefore, I come upon my destination towards the end of "Only the Weak." This rules in two ways. First, if I'm heading to work in the morning, I'm probably not in the best mood and daunted by the thought of spending eight hours in a cubicle. However, as I stride up to the building and I've got "They lack the passion to prevail/But not us/Only the weak" in my ears, I just get revved up. I'm ready to do my fucking job. Same thing on the way home; after a long day, I'm obviously tired, and having to go home and prepare and cook dinner, clean up, run errands, etc. But there's "Only the Weak" to energize me just as I'm putting my key to the lock. It's just so fun. Epic. Ridiculous. Rad. Pump your fist!

Also: they've put up a Christmas song. Check it out at Stolen Transmission's PureVolume! All I will say is that Steve mentions his influences as Queen, Guns N Roses and Blind Guardian. This coming from the guy who covered Nat King Cole's "Christmas Song" a couple of years ago. Intrigued? That's the whole point. Please check Monty Are I out!!!!

Plus, the ST PureVolume page has a link to their New Year's Resolution video which is hilariiiious! Andrew's resolution is the best...

Tell me what you like, what you don't like.
If you're already a fan, what's your fave song, yo? Why? Got any live show memories? These boys also love meeting their fans - I know there are people out with fun stories about them. Comment anonymously (here), whatevs (I know some of you do it @ MusicSecret)

I never wanted to be your dancing shoes... [12.07.06]

I still can't get Ryan Adams out of my head since his show on Monday. The good and bad thing about Ryan is that he has five million songs. This makes it very hard to keep up with him, but it's also great to have all of his music and enjoy an album I haven't listened to yet. I set my own release dates. I still can't get his Monday night performance out of my head...I'm in awe of that man. Also, I've never really had a crush on Ryan, but since seeing his hands live...um, yes. This morning I decided to listen to Love is Hell 1 & 2 because he ended his set with a rocked-out "I See Monsters." The two EPs were written soon after his girlfriend of the time died of cancer, so much of the songs are brooding and sad. Apparently his label thought they were too moody and didn't want to release the album. Ryan came to a compromise and made an electric album called Rock N Roll, as long as Love is Hell would be released. Love is Hell ended up getting nominated for a Grammy (for the cover of Oasis' "Wonderwall" which is beyond amazing...and I hate Oasis). I don't even know what I'm rambling about, except to say that this is what was going through my mind this morning on the subway.

So Monday night was Ryan Adams.

Tuesday night Erica and I went to Private Men's Club @ Black & White for Rob Hitt's birthday party. We sit down at a table and Erica goes, "I think Mischa Barton is here..." I sweep the room...yep, Mischa is sitting at a table with girlfriends. Black & White is effing weird with the celeb clientele. Adrian Grenier, Bono...who's next? No clue! I left Erica, Mike, and Trevor there to go meet up with Doug at the Crocodile Lounge for the Hush Sound afterparty-slash-Justin's birthday party. On the way out I ran into Mischa and her tall self. She's super awkward, just saying. At the lounge, Justin wasn't even there; apparently he stumbled out wasted earlier on. Good for him. I saw Monty Are I's managers and said hello, got introduced to The Hush Sound (whom I need to listen to, apparently...), and beat Doug and some challenging strangers at skee ball. I saw Jesse and her roommate Emily, who scored L.A.M.B. at the sample sale last week because I ran into Jesse on my way home and told her about it. We had some girly flipouts about what we purchased...which is always fun no matter where you are.

Back at Black & White, Mischa and her friends decided to smoke some pot in the back of the bar...and were asked to go outside because it stunk up the whole place (which is very, very small).

Last night I met up with Erica, Kelly, Christy, and J-Skills after work for a nice happy hour and a showcase @ the Knitting Factory that Kelly invited us to. We went more to catch up with each other than to enjoy any bands. Those girls are the best. We come together and discuss all the various work/love/social dramas in our lives, and 90% of the time it ends up in a swoonfest. Particularly last night since...umm...PS Erica has a boyfriend*. Just saying! She's probably going to get mad at me for writing that. Whatevsdotcom, Erica! What now?! So after all the swooning at the bar, we went to the Knitting Factory where we checked out As Tall as Lions and Meg & Dia. Two bands I've never heard. Meg & Dia were so very Tegan & Sara (right down to the hair...not to mention their freakin' name) but I like Tegan & Sara so I may (or may not) get some of their music. We'll see.

Also: Gwen Stefani has a fragrance coming out next year . Sweet. This is good news because I've just decided that I should stop wearing Clinique Happy. I've worn it for...ever? My mom always gets it for me. I need a different fragrance. Anybody have any suggestions? Right now I'm odorless (it could be worse). Though I guess I have that nice mix of blow-dried hair and (unscented) Lubriderm. Wow, I smell boring.

PS According to a video on YouTube, Norah Jones came out to play with Ryan Adams on Tuesday night AND he played "Firecracker," one of my fave RA songs. WTF?!?!?!?!

*I should note here that I am Erica's official publicist. I'd like her to maintain her low profile, but this announcement was necessary as she will probably be photographed around town canoodling with said boyfriend . She's off the market, gentlemen! And ladies. I will also state that I'm doing a pretty damn good job. I mean, I've got her wearing underwear (finally).
